Ventura County District Attorney Erik Nasarenko announced that Ricardo Fausto Nunez a 40-year-man of Moorpark, has been charged after his 10-year-old son allegedly brought live ammunition to school. Nunez faces 11 felonies, including two counts of possession of an assault weapon and nine counts of possession of a large-capacity magazine. He also faces one misdemeanor count of child endangerment. The complaint includes a special allegation that the victim was particularly vulnerable. Nunez was arraigned on June 10, 2025, in Ventura County Superior Court, where he pled not guilty to all charges.

On May 27, 2025, the School Resource Officer at Campus Canyon College Preparatory Academy in Moorpark reported that a student brought ammunition to school. The ammunition was reportedly handled and passed around by several students before being confiscated by school staff. The 10-year-old told school officials he found the bullets at home and that other ammunition and weapons were present at the home.

Ventura County Sheriff’s detectives responded to the residence and were allowed inside. During their walkthrough of the residence, investigators located two AR-15-style rifles with no serial numbers, nine high-capacity magazines, 11 rounds of 9mm ammunition, 93 rounds of .223 ammunition, and 120 rounds of 5.56 ammunition. None of the weapons or ammunition were properly stored.

“This case is a stark reminder of the importance of safely storing all firearms and ammunition, especially when children are in the home,” said District Attorney Nasarenko. “Gun owners have a legal responsibility to ensure their weapons are secured and inaccessible to minors. Failing to do so puts everyone at risk, particularly our children.”

Firearms are the leading cause of death for children and teens in the United States. California law requires gun owners to store firearms safely and securely to prevent unauthorized access and save lives. The safe storage of firearms using cable locks, trigger guards, lockboxes, and gun safes can help reduce the risk of suicide and accidental shootings. Children should also be taught what to do if they encounter a firearm: stop, do not touch, leave the area, and tell an adult. Free cable locks are often available through local police departments and Ventura County run libraries. Cable locks and gun safes are also available for purchase at gun stores and online retailers. Nunez will be back in court for an early disposition conference on July 22, 2025, at 1:30 p.m. in courtroom 37 of the Ventura County Superior Court.
