Oxnard College held an event on March 17th in support of the Ukrainian people. The event featured guest speakers, historical lectures, a poetry reading, and the raising of the Ukrainian flag over the campus. Guests included Oxnard College students, employees, and community members who were also encouraged to make donations to the Ukraine Humanitarian Fund, a refugee organization with ties to the United Nations.
The event’s keynote speaker was Ventura County District Attorney Erik Nasarenko whose parents fled Ukraine during World War II while that nation was under Soviet control. “This conflict is deeply personal for me. I’m glad to see Oxnard College and our community unite around democratic principles and the human dignity of our Ukrainian brothers and sisters.” Oxnard City Manager Alex Nguyen also spoke, drawing from his experience as a Vietnamese refugee.
Oxnard College will fly the Ukrainian flag throughout the month of March.
