Oxnard racked up its ninth murder of the year on July 17 when an elderly man died after being assaulted during an argument according to a police report.

Melecio Chavez, 73, died at Ventura County Medical Center from a blow to the head he apparently suffered while arguing with two unidentified men late Tuesday night.

Oxnard police officers answering a 911 call arrived at Chavez’ 500 N. Roosevelt Ave. home at 11:25 p.m. to find him down on the ground and bleeding from the head injury.

As Chavez was being taken to VCMC for emergency treatment, officers learned that he had stepped out of his house to argue with the men. Officers think one or both men hit Chavez.

Oxnard Police Dept.’s Major Crimes Unit has taken over the investigation and is asking for help from the public.
