On Wednesday, July 14, Congresswoman Julia Brownley (D-CA) released the following statement in response to an advertisement that recently appeared in the Ventura County Star.
“An advertisement paid for by community activists, that appeared in the Ventura County Star on July 11, 2021, reproduced a letter I wrote to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, but added a headline that was not part of the letter, giving the false impression that I called for an independent investigation of the Board of Directors of Clinicas del Camino Real, Inc. I was not informed that the letter I wrote was going to be used in this manner, nor that the full context would not be provided, nor that the letter would be altered in a manner seemingly intended to misrepresent my position. While my office received the complaint, I have no personal knowledge of the accuracy of the complaint. I simply forwarded the information I received to the federal agency of jurisdiction and asked for their ‘full and fair consideration’ as is appropriate.
“Clinicas is an extremely important healthcare provider in Ventura County, serving over 70,000 patients a year. As a Member of Congress, I have always commended Clinicas’ mission to provide its patients, especially in underserved areas of our community, with access to quality care. I also believe that we must ensure that every taxpayer dollar the federal government awards is spent in accordance with its intended use. If there are legitimate complaints about Clinicas’ operations, or the way in which federal dollars are being used by Clinicas, those deficiencies must be addressed. If there are legitimate legal or ethical complaints, individuals with evidence of misconduct should direct those concerns to the appropriate federal authorities in an appropriate manner. Going forward, I urge all parties with a legitimate interest in serving our community, and the patients served by Clinicas, to resolve any issues related to Clinicas’ operations, programs, leadership, or financial stewardship with integrity, accuracy, honesty, and full transparency.”
