Ventura County District Attorney Erik Nasarenko, announced that Edward Ayans, 49 years, of Thousand Oaks, was charged with committing the crimes of mayhem, assault with a deadly weapon, and elder abuse under circumstances likely to cause great bodily injury or death. Ayans is alleged to have committed these offenses against a 76-year-old woman in the city of Moorpark.
The complaint also alleges that Ayans inflicted great bodily injury upon the victim and that he was previously convicted of two prior “strike” felonies. Ayans is additionally charged with furnishing methamphetamine. The investigation into these and other crimes is ongoing.
On April 20, 2021, at 6:02 a.m., paramedics and Ventura County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to an apartment complex in the city of Moorpark. Upon arrival, deputies located the victim who had sustained significant injuries. Ayans was located at the scene and placed under arrest.
Ayans appeared in court on April 22, 2021, and pled not guilty to all charges and allegations. The next court appearance is set for April 27, 2021, at 1:30 p.m. in courtroom 13 of the Ventura County Superior Court, for a hearing on whether Ayans should remain in custody pending trial. Ayans is currently in custody with bail set at $570,000.
Ayans qualifies for potential sentencing under California’s Three Strikes sentencing law.If convicted of all charges and allegations, Ayans faces a maximum possible sentence of 71 years to life in prison, plus an additional 8 years.
